After six years, the Bloor Ossington Folk Festival is saying goodbye. Defined by its organizers as a “punk expression”, this free Toronto festival has fought for a fair treatment of local musicians and small businesses by the music industry and the government, respectively. It’s final edition will be happening this weekend — September 17 and 18 — at Christie Pits Park.
Headlining this year’s edition of the Bloor Ossington Folk Festival are Bry Webb and the Providers. Among the highlights of the 2016 lineup are By Divine Right, Bidiniband, CATL and The Wilderness of Manitoba. During its run, the festival pushed to put bands living on Toronto’s Ward 19 (Trinity-Spadina) in the city spotlight. The Idaho Shop, Wax Mannequin and Steve Lambke will be performing too.
Since one of main grants the event relied on has fallen through, the festival has scaled down to a single stage for its final run. Bands will be performing at the beer garden stage but, according the the festival organizers, the stage design will allow the audience and any passersby to see the musicians from around the garden and hear the music all over the park.
“This year’s lineup is inspired by the love from some of our good friends and family and a kick ass show”, reads a statement posted on the festival’s website. “Many of these bands have played the festival before and we wouldn’t/couldn’t think of putting on a farewell party without asking them to play”.
The event is free, and will run rain or shine. The Bloor Ossington Folk Festival is a family-friendly event, so kids are more than welcome.

I saw this story about Ossington Folk Fest a few weeks ago, sounds like a nice festival, too bad it is ending.
Speaking of Ossington, I used to live on Ossington, back when it was all auto body shops and sketchy Viet karaoke bars with their windows painted black. No goddamn folk festivals, that’s for sure. It changed a lot even over the years I lived there, and now I hardly recognize it at all. I wonder if my old house has been knocked down for condos yet?

Buy a new touch screen from ebay? That’s what I did (~$50). Used a heat gun to heat up the old screen, popped it off and stuck in the new one. so easy peasy.

I got an email on Tuesday from Tyler Bancroft who is managing The Zolas on their upcoming tour, and asked me about venues for them to pay at in Sacramento in November. I guess I still have some connection to the Canadian indie music world. I gave him some suggestions, and also provided him with the name of a local promoter who I see at the local shows (he puts on most of them), and who worked with Grant back in his Smugglers days. (When I told this promoter about the upcoming single show reunion of the Smugglers in Berkeley, he told me to send him the information, as he would be there.)
As for the Zolas, I’ve never seen the band, but front man, Zach was on the Tracks on Tracks train across Canada in 2012, and go to know him and his pal Adrian a little bit.

I saw your post yesterday about the amount of fall color in Oregon. If you want to see some blazing color, just drive Oregon 58 between Chiloquin and Goshen, just south of Eugene. With the right conditions, it’s ablaze of color in October. I’m hoping the weather doesn’t turn all rainy, as Peggy and I are coming over Willamette Pass on Amtrak that follows the same route, and it’s all pretty stunning coming down from the pass around Oakridge. We’re coming up for an Oregon State football game against Cal. Go Beavs!

@garfielduk it was a time issue but they had a 60 day visa that still had over a month on it. they have decided to drive across lower canada and cross from eastern canada when their current 60 days is up. they are just on the road but had hoped to meet some family in the US in a few weeks so that plan is dead now. life on the road is like that and they have nothing but time really so they are doing their best to go with the flow. it is beautiful here today so we went for a walk and now they are going to go and rent a kayak for 8.00 and go paddle for three hours; not such a bad plan b to be stuck in nelson 😉

A cool thing happened this afternoon. I went into a local establishment, Bushwakkers, to hang a couple posters. While I was in there I heard a song of my friend Sharon’s being played on the overhead system. I had to go ask about what they were playing. The guy got a bunch of music of local musicians from a couple sources including SaskMusic and makes different groupings of them. It was very cool that one of Sharon’s songs just happened to play while I was in there.
