Playlist Friday this week is all about Round 2 of Searchlight. All the artists on the playlist successfully made it past Round 1 and are region finalists. The voting for round 2 began on March 7 and ends on March 14 at 3 p.m. ET. There were more than 2000 acts that entered and we now have the top 10 finalists from each region. For each region, one act was selected that received the highest number of votes, while the other nine were selected by the CBC Music jury.
The Searchlight industry panel will help select the one winner from each of the 23 regions. The two acts who receive the highest number of votes will automatically advance, rounding out the Top 25.
After that, the celebrity judges will select three acts from the Top 25 to advance, who, along with one popular vote act, will comprise our final four. So it is mainly decided by an industry panel along with celebrity judges but our votes count for something.
What interests me the most about Searchlight, is the discovery of new talent and new music. So no matter if you vote or not, give the artists a listen and you just may find yourself a new artist to keep your ears open for. I found my top 5 from each region and made a playlist of them. I should have narrowed it down to top 3 or so but too late now! If I get a chance I will narrow it down. Not all of the artists are on Spotify yet but the rest should be on there. There are some songs that weren’t on Spotify but the artist was so a substitution song was put in.
There are a couple of artists that are in Searchlight and have been mentioned in Polaris talks as well, The Jerry Cans and Future Peers. I hope they both do well in Searchlight. There are a few artists I remember from Searchlight before such as Miss Natasha Enquist, //AMISTAD//, and Ivory Hours and are on my voting list. I am a big supporter of local talent and this young woman from Regina named Ava Wild has come onto my radar. I look forward to hearing more from her.
So take a listen to the playlist and then maybe even head over to CBC Music Searchlight and throw some of your favs a vote or two.

Good morning! I remember the HMV in the West Edmonton Mall and the stage. There was never anyone playing on it anytime I was in the store.
I apologize for the length of the playlist. I ran out of time to narrow it down but probably will some today.
I was in that West Edmonton Mall HMV last year. I don’t remember a stage but it was large with two floors. We lost the dude in there as he was enjoying the CD selection. The kid and I moved on to the bookstore and left him behind.
Other than strip malls I don’t think I have ever visited a Canadian shopping mall

I also think I lost my sweetie in the HMV at West Ed, when he was visiting me. It’s now a regular occurrence in music stores, he goes one way, I go another.

West Edmonton Mall is huge Garf and weird.
So not unlike the country it is in?
That is an excellent description, huge and weird. It’s in competition with the Mall of America to be the biggest mall in North America, and has a waterpark, hotel, and skating rink.
When I interviewed for a job at the University of Alberta, they took the applicants to the West Edmonton Mall to showcase some of the local attractions.

My brother and sis in law living in Edmonton, detest that place.
We have the MetroCentre not too far away from here (less than 30mins by car) which was at one point Europe’s largest Mall at 2,093,000 sq ft (194,400 m2) over 2 floors.

Theatre Crisp sound interesting: Theatre Crisp is a 7 piece Hip-Hop/Funk/Rock band from Niagara. Their unique sound inspires positivity to lift the human spirit. An indie roots-rock family band, The Argues officially formed in Toronto in 2010 and are now based out of Springwater, Ontario. Fronted by Sisters Argue (the very talented Sabrina 16 and Lauren 19) the band has performed at countless live shows over the past 6 years. The band is completed by mom Chantale on drums and dad Mike on guitar. The Argues’ debut album Something New was released November 3, 2016. Their songs are now being played on over 100 stations worldwide!

Back in the day, if a single stayed at number one for more than five weeks, let alone ten, it was a big deal. Bryan Adams and Wet Wet Wet’s record-smashing number ones in the ’90s made the actual news.
Flash-forward to 2016, and we had Drake’s ‘One Dance’. A song that made it to FIFTEEN WEEKS at number one in July – narrowly missing out on Bryan’s chart record of 16 weeks. And did it make the news? Sort of. If it had overtaken Bryan’s record, it might have made an “and finally” segment on the News at Ten, but not much more than that.

I am just home from work and stopping in to see what is what down here in OurBasement.
As usual folks are starting to leave just as I arrive but that is just our schedules and time zones.
The Jerry Cans are going to be at Kaslo Jazz Etc Fest so hopefully I will get the weekend off and will be able to have a listen live. They sure have a wide variety of influences; each song I have heard is quit different too. Ukiuq seems to get the plays and it is the one that I enjoy the most.

when patrons come into the community complex they often have a prepaid pass that we scan. Their name shows up when we do this. Today I scanned in Kathleen Edwards! I totally did a double take! She was not the one I was hoping for but I did not tell her that.
