The playlist this week takes us up north to experience the Northern Lights of music from NWT, Yukon and Nunavut. I put them all together as it is an area whose music I was really unfamiliar with and didn’t think I would find enough for three separate playlists. I do learn a lot putting these playlist together and have enjoyed my musical journey around Canada.

Fusing of old-world sounds and new-world flair seems to be part of what is happening in the north. Artists like Tanya Tagaq, The Jerry Cans and Quantum Tangle are proof of that. There are traditional and hip hop and rock and singer songwriters and more all adding to the mix. There are many songs with messages and many singing of their pride of where they come from. I enjoyed my visit and learning a bit more of the music coming from the north. I hope you enjoy it too.

Ryan McNally was an artist I saw at BreakOutWest in Regina last year and really enjoyed his set. Brigitte Desjardins on the washboard was fun to watch as well. I couldn’t find him on Spotify so here is a video of them performing.

Another group’s name kept coming up as I was looking up artists. I couldn’t find them on Spotify either though. Quantum Tangle are a Canadian musical group, who won the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year for their album Tiny Hands at the Juno Awards of 2017. I like what I have heard and you should check them out.

Scary Bear Soundtrack is someone we heard about from CBC Searchlight. They were from Nunavut then but seem to be located in Ottawa. They have a new track out and you can listen to it on Bandcamp. More music with a message.
