On Tuesday, (June 6, 2017) Alvvays released a new song In Undertow (see video below).   This is the first new music we’ve heard from the Toronto-based, east-coast rooted group, since 2014’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut Alvvays.  Which gave us such songs as “Adult Diversion”, “Next of Kin”, “Party Police”, and the smash hit “Archie, Marry me” (which was covered at one point by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie).

In a press release, the band said the sophomore album, entitled “Antisocialites”, will be released on September 8th, by Polyvinyl Records (US) and Royal Mountain Records (Canada).   They describe it as a “deep-end of reckless romance and altered dates”, whatever that means.  The first song though does not disappoint, it has that sound of effortless pop angst – which is their trademark.

Rolling Stone once described their debut album’s songs “read like a great short-story collection, full of wild romance, quarter-life confusion and sly humor. Set to exquisitely yearning melodies and pitch-perfect guitar jangle and fuzz”. I’d argue the same can be said for the new album.  The sound – if it follows this lead single – will also fall in line.

Antisocialites’ song listing is as follows:

 01 In Undertow
02 Dreams Tonite
03 Plimsoll Punks
04 Your Type
05 Not My Baby
06 Hey
07 Lollipop (Ode to Jim)
08 Already Gone
09 Saved by a Waif
10 Forget About Life

Aside from a few shows around Chicago’s Lollapalooza in early August, the tour actually begins at the end of the same month in Europe, before hopping over to North America – late September for a fall tour that takes them right into the beginning of December – ending with 4 nights at the Mod Club in Toronto.  Alvvays have a very busy year ahead of them.
