Hey Our Basement!

Hey Our Basement!

Ryan Hicks here, I’m writing to you all the way from Regina. I released my second full-length album ‘Pulsing Colours’ earlier this year + this is my second single “I Want It”.

When I wrote this song I was thinking about not only myself, but many people close to me. I have a restless heart in that I always seem to be searching for something more. That serves me well in some ways, but often I miss out on wonderful experiences because I’m not in the moment and I am thinking about something else. The lyric, “I want it. Don’t know what it is but I want it” refers to sometimes I don’t even know what I want. There is a feeling of restlessness that comes over me and the more people I meet, the more I see the same thing in others.

The lyric,
“This empty cup is never full.
No matter what I still feel the pull.
Everything I need in front of my eyes.
A perfect life no one could deny”

This metaphor of a cup never being full has a few possible interpretations and I think whatever the listener gets from it will work for them.

While this is a heavy song, I wanted to avoid a cliche “rock” sound so it starts quite quiet. As the song emotionally builds the music becomes more intense climaxing at the repetition of “I Want It” into a scream. Of all my music, this song is the closest to my heart and definitely the most vulnerable song I’ve ever written.

Anyways, thanks so much for checking it out! It’s a song I’m really proud of, so I hope you like it.

Thanks again,
Ryan Hicks
