What were you doing in 2011? The tracks on the playlist this week are from Canadian Indie albums released in 2011. Music has a way of transporting us to a different time in our memories and for those of you that were listening to CBC R3 back in the old days, many of the tracks on the playlist will take you to those days. There are a lot of tracks that might not be as familiar but the artist playing them is because it was from an earlier album before you became aware of them. Or there are some you may have just not have heard from before. So while it is a look back at 2011 there may still be some new to you tracks.
We started with 2006 in March because I was hoping to make this a monthly playlist and there are 12 months in a year and 2006 was 12 years ago. The plan is to do a playlist about albums from 2011 this time and 2012 next month, etc until we get to the current year and then see how it goes from there. It can be fun to check back and see what music we still love and what music we once loved but have moved on from and to find out what we missed. I made a YouTube playlist that you can find below, with pretty much the same songs that are on the Spotify playlist. The bonus of that is many have videos to watch as well.
2011 brought us great albums from The Burning Hell, The Barr Brothers, Jenn Grant, Handsome Furs, Imaginary Cities, Library Voices, Dan Mangan and so many more. Seven years ago, things were going strong in the CBC R3 community. People were meeting up more and more, the blog was busy and lasting friendships were being formed. I am enjoying the trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoy it too.

My usual bit about videos: Jill Barber’s *Tell Me*, well-known, takes on a very different vibe if you look at the video.
I found that as well Benoit. It was fun checking out some of the videos. When I am looking for the playlist, my first choice is the official video, then good quality live video, then official audio. With YouTube’s new streaming service there are more tracks I am able to find on there.

2011, I think, was my first full year as a full time westerner. Moved out west for the second time in 2010, but it was already a quarter to halfway done. So in 2011, well, that was probably around the time I started commenting on the R3 blog with any regularity as I was listening to the 4 hour Craig Norris Hour show. Or was it 3 hours?
Now that I’m listening through the playlist: a) many of these songs are uber familiar. Many. Definitely a throw back. b) the first one, Adam & the Amythists, I always really liked that song, this is the first I’ve ever seen the video. While it’s a little bit hipster for sure, I find it really reminds me of “home” and I like that.
Hey Flannnnytom. Haha. I think Craig’s show may have been both. I feel like it was 4 but in one of the changes it may have shortened. Not sure. I do enjoy the memories some of the tracks bring up and many videos I never watched before.
