Latin American Heritage Month: Celebrating the Sounds of Latin Canada
October is Latin American Heritage Month here in Canada, a time to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Latin American communities across the country. Officially established in 2018, when Parliament unanimously passed the Latin American Heritage Month Act, this annual celebration honours the more than half a million Canadians of Latin American origin who help shape our country’s cultural, artistic, and social landscape.
With roots in more than 20 countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, El Salvador, and Venezuela, Latin American communities bring an incredible range of cultures, traditions, and languages to Canada. Spanish and Portuguese are widely spoken, alongside Indigenous languages that reflect the depth and diversity of Latin American heritage.
Throughout October, communities across the country celebrate through music, art, film, festivals, and opportunities to learn more about Latin American history and heritage. And here inOurBasement, we’re celebrating in the way we know best: through music!
A Diverse Soundscape of Latin Canadian Music
Latin Canadian music is as diverse as the communities and cultures that inspire it. Artists draw on traditions and rhythms from across Latin America, including cumbia, salsa, samba, and folk music, while bringing those influences into contemporary sounds like indie rock, electronic music, hip-hop, and pop.
Some artists explore their cultural roots directly through their lyrics, instrumentation, and arrangements. Others weave those influences into music that crosses genres, experiments with unexpected sounds, and refuses to fit neatly into a single category. The result is a constantly evolving musical landscape that reflects both heritage and innovation.
And that’s worth celebrating. There isn’t just one Latin Canadian sound. These artists come from different countries, communities, and generations, each bringing their own experiences, identities, and perspectives to the music they create here in Canada. Their work reflects the connections between cultures, the evolution of musical traditions, and the creativity that emerges when different influences come together.
For those of us who love discovering Canadian indie music, this is an opportunity to explore beyond our usual listening habits and hear the many ways artists are shaping Canada’s musical identity.
Discovering Latin Canadian Artists
For this edition of OurBasement, I’ve gathered a selection of tracks, mostly recent releases, to showcase some of the creativity and range found in Latin Canadian music.
It’s a chance to discover artists you may not know yet, explore sounds that might be new to you, and hear how musical traditions from across Latin America are finding their place in Canada’s contemporary music scene. From familiar rhythms to unexpected genre combinations, there’s plenty to explore.
One of the things I love about Canadian indie music is that there’s always more to discover. Looking beyond the artists and genres we already know opens the door to new perspectives, fresh sounds, and music that challenges our expectations. This playlist is an invitation to do just that.
Latin American Heritage Month is about more than recognizing the past. It’s also about celebrating the people, creativity, and cultural contributions that continue to shape Canada today. Music offers a particularly powerful way to experience that diversity, connecting us through rhythm, melody, storytelling, and shared emotion—even when we don’t speak the same language.
So, whether you’re already familiar with Latin Canadian artists or just beginning to explore this part of Canada’s music scene, I hope this playlist introduces you to something new and gives you a few tracks to add to your own playlists.
Happy Latin American Heritage Month from OurBasement! Let’s turn it up and celebrate the sounds of Latin Canada.
