Hundreds of New Canadian Sounds to Explore

July was another busy month for Canadian indie music. With hundreds of new releases arriving from artists across the country, there was no shortage of music to discover—and that made putting together the July 2026 Release Radar both a challenge and a lot of fun.

The playlist is a broad look at what Canadian artists were releasing throughout the month, moving across indie rock, folk, roots, hip-hop, electronic, pop, experimental music, jazz, punk, and plenty of sounds that don’t fit neatly into any one category. There are familiar names, emerging artists, collaborations, unexpected discoveries, and songs that deserve a little more time in your ears.

To get things started, I’ve pulled a selection of featured tracks to the front of the playlist. Raven Reid, Laura Niquay, Ken Presse, The Deep Dark Woods, Fiver, and William Prince with Nathaniel Rateliff offer some of the many different directions Canadian music is taking right now. You’ll also hear collaborations from Field Guide and Georgia Harmer, N NAO and Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Wolf Castle, Cadence Weapon and Jessa Sky, and D.O. Gibson, Maestro Fresh Wes and jrdn.

The opening tracks also move comfortably between genres and regions. Lido Pimienta, Daphni, Gayance, Waahli, and RUMPUS bring electronic and dance-oriented sounds, while Lisa LeBlanc, Lemon Bucket Orkestra, Rick White and Julie Doiron, and The Deep Dark Woods offer different takes on folk, roots, and Canadian songwriting traditions.

On the indie and alternative side, you’ll find Sister Ray, Jesse Mac Cormack, Kiwi Jr., Elephant Stone, Scott Benson Band, North Of Dewdney, Thunder Queens, and many more. And there are plenty of quieter discoveries tucked throughout the full playlist as well—artists and songs that may not have made the opening selection but are well worth exploring.

That’s really the point of Release Radar. The featured tracks at the beginning are just the starting point. Behind them is a much bigger collection of music gathered from the hundreds of releases that crossed my radar during July. Some artists will be familiar, some may be completely new to you, and some songs may take a few listens before they reveal what makes them special.

It is also a reminder of just how difficult it is to define Canadian indie music with a single sound. From the Prairies to the East Coast, Quebec to British Columbia, artists are drawing from an enormous range of influences and finding new ways to combine them.

So start at the beginning, or jump around and see what catches your attention. Let the playlist be a discovery rather than something you have to listen to from start to finish. There are hundreds of July releases waiting to be explored.
