In Canada, Mother’s Day is a cherished occasion to honour not only biological mothers but also stepmothers, mothers-in-law, guardians, and all the remarkable women who have played maternal roles in our lives. It’s a time to reflect on their unwavering presence — through life’s highs and lows — and to express gratitude for all they’ve given.

A Personal Reflection

Last year, as my mother faced a hospital stay, a cancer diagnosis, and the start of chemotherapy, I found solace in music. Céline Dion’s “Goodbye’s (The Saddest Word)” captured my emotions so deeply. This year, I face my first Mother’s Day without her. In this playlist, I’ve included a few songs especially for her — including Billy Raffoul’s brand-new track “The Woman Who Raised Me” and his 2020 song “It’s a Beautiful Life,” which we played at her memorial service. This collection is also for all who are grieving a mother’s loss — you are not alone.

For the Mothers Still Loving, Still Worrying

Even as I grieve, I hold space for my own experience as a mother. My son has faced serious medical challenges, and “You Are My Sunshine” brings me to tears every time I hear it. It reminds me of the moments I nearly lost him — and how that song’s simple lyrics now carry a heavy and personal meaning. The Royal Foundry’s hauntingly beautiful 2018 version is included in the playlist.
