But the holiday as we know it began in the U.S., where Sonora Smart Dodd, inspired by Mother’s Day, advocated for a day to honour fathers. The first official Father’s Day took place in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910—and over the decades, the tradition has spread across the globe.
