Canadian Hip Hop is what you will find on our playlist this week. Our friend Russ in Dearborn, Michigan posted on Facebook “Turned the neighbour kid onto Canadian hip-hop. Thanks, d-sisive, Cadence Weapon, Ghettosocks, Classified, and all that he finds.” This turned into a bit of a discussion of all those others that he may find. I had been pondering on what I should do for a playlist this week and the idea for a hip hop playlist started to form in my mind. Then I read our friend Cathleen’s comment saying “I sense a playlist happening…” and I decided that yes we should have a hip hop playlist this week and here we are.
The Canadian hip hop scene was first established in the 1980s. Through a variety of factors, it developed much more slowly than Canada‘s popular rock music scene, and apart from a short-lived burst of mainstream popularity from 1989 to 1991, it remained largely an underground phenomenon until the early 2000s.
Canada’s propensity to create quality artists who rarely achieved public recognition prompted Allmusic to state that Canadian hip hop is the “best-kept secret in hip-hop.”[4] However, with the strong entrance of Drake, K’naan and the moderate success of P Reign and Kardinal Offishall after the turn of the millennium, Canadian hip hop artists have finally achieved worldwide mainstream international recognition. (From Wikipedia)
The first part of the playlist is some of our old favourites from some of our favourite Canadian hip hop artists. It transitions into a few of the new artists on the scene before going back to some newer tracks from our old favourites. There may be a stray track here and there but that is the main outline of the playlist. Have fun!
What favourite tracks of yours do you really wish were on here?
Thanks for the idea Russ and Cathleen!
G’day…
Hello
Hello!
Hey ho! It’s Friday Morning Cartunes morning. In some 14 minutes…
@Janet, have you emailed me an address yet?
Garfield, I completely forgot! I’ll do that now, is the Our Basement address the right one to send it to?
Good morning!
Nice playlist.
Yort says “NICE!”
@Janet, yes please
Hi all!
Thanks Russ. 😀
Another great playlist, Darbar!
Awesome! Glad you are enjoying it Janet! 😀
I forgot to add Sask artist Ursa Maja. He is definitely worth adding. He has a new track for summer that added on the end of the playlist.
@darbar re yesterdays post about festival camping
I would totally rent the old trailer for the festival. one recommendation would be outside shade. I noted the lack of awning which makes it hotter inside as well as limits you options for outside. a big old tarp and some bungie cords would work or if you have one of those shade room type things that would be the bomb.
Thanks for the tips morgana. I do have one of those screened shade room things and will make sure to bring it along. We will probably be camping in a friend’s farm yard 6 miles away from the site instead of right there at the festival. Advantages and disadvantages to that of course.
a little far to bike probably. have a great time!
A little too far for me probably and I am sure my sister wouldn’t want to attempt it. There are a few people staying at the farm so I am sure it will be a fun time there just not as convenient. And of course I will have to save my drinking until we are back at the farm. We will have access to the house and company of good people and quieter than the festival camping though.
that sounds like a great plan @darbar. nice to have a little space from all of the hustle and bustle of the festival grounds. we are camping on a friends property in Kaslo during Jazz Etc Fest. He will be hosting a family reunion but we can just tuck into a corner with our VW fan and be self sufficient. The electric assist bikes will get us to and from the festival site nicely too.
That sounds fantastic morgana. I could learn much from you.
we simply need to go to a festival together and combine our shared knowledge!
What a splendid idea!
Lethbridge, AB is about halfway between us. Any good festivals around there? hehe
I have been to a canada day celebration there … not a big deal. let the research commence!
actually i have to head to a dr’s appoint, work and then home for the final pack.
BUT when I get back let’s talk more about this. I have a feeling we would do things up right together 😉
@morgana – I have that same feeling! We might have to plan for next year but plan we should!
Twin Butte had a festival a couple years ago. Maybe they will again. Haha!
