The playlist this week is the seventh in a series of playlists where we are checking out Canadian Independent Record Companies and the artists they represent. We have checked out Arts and Crafts, Constellation Records, Dine Alone Records, Last Gang Records, Mint Records, and Paper Bag Records so far. This month we are hearing from Canadian artists with Six Shooter Records. It is interesting to hear the sounds that each label leans towards and Six Shooter does seem to lean towards Alt-Country/Americana but that is not the only genre represented.

Six Shooter Records is an independent record label based in Toronto, that uses an artist-centric business model, focusing on art before commerce combined with extensive touring. Six Shooter Records was founded in 2000 by Shauna de Cartier. The mission statement of the company is, Life is Too Short to Listen to Shitty Music. (source: Wikipedia)

Six Shooter Records began as “I think a typical indie label story,” says de Cartier. When Luke Doucet — at the time, frontman of psych-rockabilly band Veal — was looking to release a solo album, “I couldn’t find anyone to release the record, so I did it myself.” That record,Aloha Manitoba, launched a very successful solo career for Doucet as well as a longstanding relationship with Six Shooter that continues to this day. The playlist has a couple tracks each for the current roster of artists and some for artists that were with Six Shooter Records at some point of their career. It’s a pretty great roster and makes for a pretty darn good playlist. Yeehaw!
