This weeks playlist is in honour of Queen Victoria’s birthday. Victoria Day is this coming Monday and that also means it is May long weekend.

Initially in honour of Queen Victoria‘s birthday, it has since been celebrated as the official birthday of Canada’s sovereign. It is informally considered to be the beginning of the summer season in Canada. The holiday has been observed in Canada since at least 1845, originally falling on Victoria’s actual birthday (May 24). The holiday has always been a distinctly Canadian observance and continues to be celebrated across the country. It falls on the Monday between the 18th and the 24th (inclusive) and so is always the penultimate Monday of May (May 23 in 2022). The playlist on Spotify and YouTube, begins with a track called Victoria Day by Melissa McClelland. That is followed by a bunch of songs about a variety of Queens and then some other royalty. There are some songs about May and songs by some royal artists and ends with a track from Surf Dad’s EP Long Weekend called All My Friends. Spending the Long Weekend with all your friends seems like a good way to do it. Add some Canadian indie tunes and it just got even better. Happy Birthday to the Queen!
