The OurBasement playlist this week is the Release Radar for September 2022 and is full of all the new music Canadian artists created in the last month or so. There is a Spotify Release Radar playlist, and the playlist on YouTube.

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.

Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”.  The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools (Source: Govt of Canada)

In respect for this day, I am lifting up some Indigenous artists to the top of the playlist and changed the Release Radar image to orange. I am wearing my orange t-shirt and educating myself by studying for my Decolonizing the Arts class today. Are you wearing your orange t-shirt?

The Spotify Release Radar playlist has over 250 songs on it this month but the converter can only handle 250, so the YouTube playlist doesn’t have all of the tracks on the Spotify playlist. The tracks on the playlists are all new releases with some being teasers for upcoming albums, some from just released albums or EPs, and some are stand alone singles. The tracks were discovered through Spotify, Earshot, Exclaim and other sources. The top half are tracks from artists I was aware of and some that caught my ear with the rest following. There may be some gems in that bottom half that I just didn’t get to yet so I encourage you to check them all out.

Enjoy the playlists of music released in September 2022, and few just discovered tracks as well.
