This week’s playlist is a continuation of our cross country journey we are going on this year, with a listen to the Alberta Adagios and Allegrettos 2025. Back in the early days of OurBasement, we took this journey before and I thought it was time to take it again. On August 5 of 2016 we had a stop in Alberta with a follow up in 2021 and we are back in 2025 to hear what is new there.

Alberta is another province bursting with musical talent, and the Wild Rose country is nothing if not diverse. From wide-open folk traditions to forward-thinking indie, from high-energy country to experimental sounds, Alberta’s music scene offers something for everyone.

It’s a vibrant community, anchored by two strong musical cities—Edmonton and Calgary—but thriving well beyond their borders. With countless live music venues, festivals, and a mix of established and emerging artists, Alberta has long been a place where Canadian music blooms.

Highlights of Alberta’s Music Scene:

  • Diverse Genres: Pop, rock, country, jazz, folk, Caribbean, classical, blues—you name it, Alberta has artists shaping it.
  • Festival Culture: Summer brings some of Canada’s best-known festivals, like the Edmonton Folk Music FestivalCalgary Folk Music FestivalBig Valley Jamboree, and North Country Fair, plus unique regional gems like Shady Grove Music Festival and the Wild Mountain Music Festival.
  • Live Venues: Spaces such as Arts CommonsThe Starlite RoomThe Aviary in Edmonton, and Calgary’s iconic Music Mile offer stages for everything from grassroots shows to world-class acts.
