Daniel Romano – Modern Pressure (Independent)

Called Modern Pressure, the new LP — Romano’s seventh solo album — was recorded in Finnsäs, Sweden, with longtime engineer Kenneth Meehan. A press release compares it to the work of Lee Hazlewood, Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg, Randy Newman and Bob Dylan. It also promises the album presents “observational scrutiny beneath the overcast atmosphere of 2016 and vigorously tackles the present-day heaviness we contain in the jotting bones of our guilty expressions.”(Exclaim!)

Do Make Say Think – Stubborn Persistent Illusions (Constellation Records)

Earlier this year, Do Make Say Think revealed plans for their first new album since 2009’s Other Truths. Now, that wait is over and you can hear Stubborn Persistent Illusions right now.(Exclaim!)

Land Of Talk – Life After Youth (Dine Alone/Saddle Creek)

Lord knows, much has happened in the years since Land Of Talk released its most recent album, 2010’s Cloak And Cipher. But for bandleader Elizabeth Powell, that time has represented an accumulation of hardships and obstacles — her father’s stroke, a hard-drive crash that wiped out a bunch of her music, the usual industry woes and lineup changes — that have both slowed her down and sparked her drive for renewal. The title of Land Of Talk’s new album, Life After Youth, wraps that whole bittersweet journey into three ambivalent words that connote a seemingly contradictory, but entirely appropriate, bundle of weariness and willingness to embrace a new day.(NPR)

She Devils – She Devils (Secretly Canadian)

Continuing where they left off with their EP, She-Devils’ new material is sourced from an “amusement park of sounds,” inspired by such icons as Iggy Pop, Madonna, as well as “the romantic longing of ‘60s yé-yé.” A visual component is built into their music, too, as the two-piece of Kyle Jukka and Audrey Ann Boucher takes a page from the art of Andy Warhol and Quentin Tarantino.(Consequence of Sound)
