Devin Townsend – EMPATH (HevyDevy Records)

Opening the album is Castaway, an atmospheric and sedate number, using the sound of waves and seagulls along with a slow and relaxing electrical guitar solo prior to the soft sounds of the Caribbean begin to join in followed by a beautiful choral section, already displaying the variety that will be utilised before a more pop sound kicks, and then the guiatars and drums join the party along with the distinct voice of Devin Townsend.(R o c k ‘N’ L o a d)

Julian Taylor Band – Avalanche (Gypsy Soul Records)

Self-described “pilgrims of funk, soul ‘n’ roll”, the Julian Taylor Band are back with their latest soulful groove “Avalanche”. Avalanche may be musical revisionist Julian Taylor’s most personal record to date, featuring eight songs written during a period of self-reflection after looking through a treasure trove of life memories stored in his mother’s attic. (Folk Roots Radio)

Kiwi jr. – Football Money (Mint Records)

Kiwi Jr. have alluded that their debut album would be something of an homage to the city of Toronto, where the former East coasters had recently relocated. To many a bitter local, the idea of producing a rock record about the 416 will sound terrifically uncool. It’s hard to imagine anyone being able to glean any kind of romance or mystique from a city that manages to be so obnoxiously prideful and yet so lacking in self-awareness.(Exclaim!)

Nick Teehan – These Little Things (Indie)

Steven Lambke – Dark Blue (You’ve Changed Records)

When your career has been equally defined by some truly iconic anthems, and by helping to launch many equally respected acts into the Canadian music consciousness, sometimes you need a second to go back to your roots. Talltale – A Japanese Fever Dream (indie)

The Strumbellas – Rattlesnake

One of the emerging flag bearers of the relatively new sub-genre of Alternative Country known as Pastoral Pop are The Strumbellas, whose penchant for sunny, melodic, chant-laden, singalong songs is unwavering. Wintersleep – In The Land Of (Dine Alone)

Our old Nova Scotia pals Wintersleep unleash their latest on Friday, March 29, so it’s more than fitting they kick off an East Coast tour tonight (see dates below). In The Land Of contains songs from on the group’s two great strengths, extremely catchy tunes albeit slightly unsettling and eerie ones. Check out Beneficiary for instance, with its disco-beat chorus and downright happy-sounding verse, until it sinks in that it begins “All my days I open up my eyes/Beneficiary of a genocide.” The point is don’t get too comfortable, remember how you got there.(top100canadianblog)
