Canada stages its next invasion
Scruffy, indie-rock collectives from the past decade no longer represent Canadian cool. They have been replaced by the mellow flows of the DIY, Soundcloud generation. (Globe and Mail)
iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball concert was six… hours… long.
On Saturday, however, the show lurched along for close to six hours, with long stretches between performances where audiences were coached on how to dance and smile and drilled with cheering exercises in an attempt to procure the desired television optics. Presumably many attendees had got tickets through some kind of contest or giveaway, but anyone who paid the full price of admission ($200-plus) was essentially paying for the privilege to be an extra in a film shoot.(NOW)
hello
Good morning!
Hello hello!
It might not be a good idea to look at this site when you are hungry (as I am now)
https://www.melburyandappleton.co.uk/
Good morning! Re the “racist-not racist” lawsuit up there, I sure don’t know how it’ll turn out, but I do find the school people’s opinion to be weak and derived — e.g. whaaaa? My asterisks around the pith. The lyrics are those of a song included in the play: “While its lyrics are not overly racist … *the historical context of the song is racist*,” their email says. It goes on to note that Johnson performed for mostly non-Native audiences, and in a style that “…depicted Native people and culture in romantic ways, while lamenting the dying out of Native civilization to be replaced by a superior western civilization.” ”
Anyway. The school people should just have kept quiet, but I guess they’re oversensitised to toeing absolute, irreproachable correctness.
Nardwuar is the first item on *q* this morning!
Straight Canada, who doesn’t know Nardwuar, is gonna write in like WTF?
Yes, Benoît, that’s so right.
Couldn’t agree more…
good morning crew.
I am not awake enough to consider political correctness/hypersensitivity/white guilt/ appropriate corrections of history written by the victors BUT at this stage I can say that sometimes I miss the man hair of the 80’s. Wow!
I saw Nardwuar outside the Orpheum when I was in Vancouver a few months ago. He was thoroughly engaged in a conversation with someone else coming out from the performance or I would have said hi. I shall make my way to q now.
I’m looking forward to checking out the q podcast later today once it downloads
Nardwuar is one of those people I would rather read than hear what he says or sings. I may still check it out though. hehe
Hi all!
It is amazing how much today’s Nardwuar remains so much like the one of years ago. Super fast talker, will interrupt to correct, surprises host with a gift that’s the most, tells (in this case) a story where he namedrops a couple of the most famous names in music — that he missed seeing in person because of a banality…
dar, you might listen to this one. Tom Power gets to play guest banjo with The Evaporators on a really good cover, among things. Not all that long a *q* item, all told.
Though, dar, I agree, he’s a “high-energy listen”
I do have trouble with his voice and how he talks but I like the guy and will check it out. Thanks for the heads up Benoit.
Out for a while, starting out with shoveling. Ottawa’s under an Alberta Clipper — snow, blowing around, but no complaints. The whole East is being messed up: http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Current.aspx?location=USNY0124
hello again
Hiya Garf
I could only find the q podcast for yesterdays show
The podcasts usually don’t update until mid-afternoon (EST). I would imagine it’ll be up in the next couple of hours. (If you’re talking about the q podcast)
Thanks Janet, I’ll try again a bit later
It’s not yet up on the podcast site, but it’s here already: http://www.cbc.ca/radio/q
… gives high five in passing …
what was that short blur that hit me on the back?
I am trying to put together an xml (podcast) feed for the WRP, what do you think of this description?
On the second Monday of each month our boss, Wild Raccoon, will use the twin tape deck he found in a dumpster along with his raccoon to human translator to bring you a selection of music by Canadian artists (usually based on one of the mixtapes he finds outside someone’s bedroom window) along with a cookie recipes, your mail and whatever else he can think of to fill the other segments
no blur here
not even slow and steady
slow and unsteady but persistent
drink enough gin and everything will blur
@garfielduk aside from the obvious type to see if anyone is paying attention I think that it is great.
I would like to ask the Wild Racoon a question; have you ever read this book?
http://browseinside.harpercollins.ca/index.aspx?isbn13=9781443411554
I think you would appreciate it greatly. Which Canadian musician do you think should put music to and sing which of those great poems?
You are ahead of me on the time of day so perhaps you are ahead of me with cocktails as well.
It is only 1:40 here so give me a few hours and I will complete my day with a nice juicy martini with two olives!
I haven’t even had a cup of tea yet never mind Gin
Hmmmmmm, a Canadian Poetry edition of the show with songs based who’s lyrics come from poems
which typo? I added more than one, purely for Benoit you understand *shifty eyes*
The Wild Racoon would not approve of this given the wild animal code of competitive conduct but here it is anyway

a very sweet short that is in the running for an Oscar nomination. I have not researched the music but the artist is from Toronto.
Wild Raccoon is wild in name only now (or if someone else eats the last cookie… or the first cookie… or any of the cookies)
